Different Types of Lab Freezers and Their Uses

Although Lab freezers may look like freezers used in your home or perhaps slightly bigger than it, they are used to store critical materials, some of which are hazardous.  These lab materials are also to be kept at constant, regulated temperature.  If you will know the different types of lab freezers, there are small ones that can be placed under any counter, the regular-sized freezers and the walk-in freezers which are extremely large.  While the lowest temperature of our home freezers reach -10 degrees Celsius, there are lab freezers that are kept at extremely low temperatures of -85 degrees Celsius.

There are many purposes for using these biosafety cabinets freezers.   Serums and tissues samples, samples of DNA and RNA, bacteria strains, and protein extracts are some of the materials that are placed inside a lab freezer.  These freezers are also used to preserve organs and blood in hospitals, and to keep medicines in pharmacies.  To prevent degradation of specimens, they are kept in the lab freezer t constant temperature.

You can also find a general purpose lab freezer which is similar to a home refrigeration unit.  They also have shelves both in the unit and in the door, and rubber gaskets to prevent the cold from escaping, just like a home refrigerator.  Their temperatures, though, are lower than our refrigerators since theirs is usually kept between -15 to   -25 degrees Celsius. while our freezers are only up to -10 degrees Celsius.  These lab freezers have a locking device and in order not to keep opening the lab freezer to check its temperature, it comes with an LCD temperature display so that temperatures can be monitored constantly.

There are many different kinds of lab freezers.  There are low temperature freezers that can store thousands of samples in many freezer racks and reach very low temperatures.  There is another super low lab freezer reaching the temperatures of -150 degrees Celsius without using liquid nitrogen. If you are storing flammable materials, a lab freezer is very important.  Volatile materials can be stored in specially designed freezers.  They meet OSHA standards but should till make certain to have alarms, monitors, and back up performance features if you are freezing critical biological or high-value life science materials.

There is also a freezer at call the blood bank freezer used to store blood and plasma.  You cannot use an ordinary refrigerator for this purpose because you cannot properly maintain the balance of temperature when the doors are opened.  Since blood has a very short shelf life, blood bank freezers are durable and require little maintenance.
